Pattern for Konstanz

Creating repeatable graphic patterns inspired by Konstanz's unique character

Pattern as a Design Language

Pattern design demands a different mode of thinking than logo or brand identity work. Where a logo needs to stand alone — singular, memorable, immediately readable — a pattern has to work in relationship to itself. It tiles, rotates, scales, and repeats, and every version of that operation needs to feel right.

For the Konstanz city branding project, the pattern brief came from a desire to capture the character of the Bodensee region. The icons we developed — boats, birds, architectural fragments, water — had to read individually and cohere as a system. Each element needed to lock into a grid and still feel hand-drawn enough to have warmth.
